Tip

Wallets offer many ways to organize expenses.

  • Purpose: Mandatory expenses like bills, ongoing expenses like food
  • Payment method: Credit card, cash, bank account
  • Accounts: Credit card, cash, bank account

You can rename "Wallets" to "Accounts" or anything else: Go to Settings > Wallets > Tap the button on the top-right > Tap Manage, then Wallets and edit the name

Pin wallets

You can rearrange your wallets in the Summary view, putting the most important ones on the top.

  1. Go to Summary
  2. Tap the Edit button next to the Wallets title
  3. Touch and hold the wallet you want to move, then drag it to a new location

Edit balance

A balance is the remaining amount after your expenses are deducted from your income (expenses - income = balance).

  1. Go to Summary > Tap the wallet
  2. In the Balance card, tap Set balance
  3. Type the amount and then tap the button
Tip

Balance has a few limitations:

  • Balance carry over (or rollover) isn't supported yet in Gem. This will be added soon
  • Your balance will not update if you edit previous expenses

Monthly balance

You can manage your wallet balance on a monthly basis.

  1. Go to Summary > Tap the wallet
  2. Tap Edit on the top-right
  3. Tap Period > Monthly
  4. Tap Update
Tip

Choose All-time instead of "Monthly" to view your lifetime balance (since you started using Gem)

Total balance

You can view the combined sum of your balances.

  1. Go to Summary
  2. Tap the Edit button next to the Wallets title
  3. Tap Add > Choose Total balance

Merge wallets

Combine similar wallets by moving expenses into one wallet, then delete the other to keep things tidy.

  1. Go to Settings > Wallets
  2. Navigate to the wallet you want to delete
  3. Tap on the top-right corner, then Edit
  4. Tap Merge on the top-right corner
  5. Choose the wallet you want to move the expenses to
  6. Tap Merge to confirm
Tip

If you don't see a "Merge" button, that wallet doesn't have any expenses so you can safely delete it

Set favorite wallets

If you add most of your expenses to a single wallet, like a primary credit card or budget, Gem can automatically choose this wallet for you whenever you create new expenses.

  1. Go to Settings > New items
  2. Under Favorites, tap Keep expenses in...
  3. Choose a wallet
Tip

  • Traveling? Create a new budget (or wallet) for it, like "NYC 2024", and set it as your favorite wallet. Just don't forget to change it when your trips ends 🥸
  • You can also set favorite income category, just look for Keep income in...
